Shang City Ruins, Bronze Age archaeological site in Zhengzhou, China
Shang City Ruins is an extensive archaeological site with remains of walls, palaces, and residential structures from an early urban settlement. The preserved foundations and wall segments allow visitors to see the layout and spatial organization of this ancient city.
The site was an early capital of the Shang Dynasty dating to around 1600 BC. Systematic excavations since 1950 have gradually revealed the history and importance of this early Chinese civilization center.
The site contains remains of palaces and royal workshops where craftspeople produced bronze, jade, and ceramic items. These work areas reveal how people here created both everyday and precious goods thousands of years ago.
The site is walkable and accessible without any entrance fee. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain when exploring the exposed structures.
The city walls were built using a rammed-earth technique where wooden frames compressed soil layer by layer. This construction method was remarkably effective and allowed structures to survive thousands of years.
