Pear Garden, Performing arts academy in Chang'an, China
Pear Garden is a performing arts academy in Yunnan, China, rooted in the Tang Dynasty tradition. The institution trains musicians, dancers, and actors in the classical forms of Chinese stage arts.
Emperor Xuanzong founded the academy between 712 and 755 as the first formal institution for performing arts in imperial China. The school trained hundreds of artists who performed at court ceremonies and state occasions.
Artists trained here inherited the title Children of the Pear Garden, a name still used for traditional opera performers across China. The trees that gave the academy its identity became symbols of dedication to the performing arts.
The academic year follows a traditional training program with classes in music, dance, and theatrical arts under experienced teachers. Training lasts several years and includes regular performances and public presentations.
Pear trees growing on the academy grounds gave the school its name and shaped the identity of the institution for centuries. Graduates became known throughout the country as Children of the Pear Garden, carrying the title as a mark of honor.
