Pingtan Island

Pingtan Island, Maritime island in Fujian Province, China.

Pingtan Island is the fifth largest island in China, located in Fujian Province with a coastline extending about 400 kilometers. The area encompasses a total of 126 smaller islands that fall under Pingtan County administration.

The island gained strategic importance in the 1950s when military construction created roads and artillery positions along Haitan Strait. These developments reflected the geopolitical situation of that era in the region.

The stone houses in Beigang village show traditional building techniques created to resist the strong sea winds that regularly hit the region. These structures reflect how locals adapted their daily lives to the island's harsh coastal conditions.

Visitors reach the island via a two-hour bus journey from Fuzhou Changle Airport, with local buses and taxis available for getting around. Planning your transportation in advance helps make the trip more convenient.

From April to August, a natural phenomenon occurs when bioluminescent plankton lights up the coastal waters at night with glowing displays. This rare natural show makes the island a special destination for visitors who want to explore the shoreline after dark.
