Wuqiu Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Daqiu Village, Taiwan
Wuqiu Lighthouse is a black cylindrical tower located at the highest point of Daqiu Island, reaching approximately 20 meters in height. The structure features a lantern room and an observation platform used to guide ships traveling through the Taiwan Strait.
British engineer David Marr Henderson built the lighthouse in 1874 to guide ships between Fuzhou and Xiamen through regional waters. Military tensions led to its closure in 1951, after which structural reinforcement with concrete and underground tunnels occurred between 1960 and 1975.
The lighthouse embodies the connection between this island and the shipping routes that have been used for generations. Visitors can still sense how important this structure remains to the maritime identity of the region.
Visitors should be prepared for windy conditions and wear sturdy footwear, especially on uneven paths leading to the lighthouse. The best time to visit is during clear weather when views across the Taiwan Strait are most rewarding.
The lighthouse features underground tunnels and reinforced concrete walls that reveal its past as a military lookout post. These defensive elements remain visible today and tell the story of a time when these waters were strategically contested.
