Tianducheng is a residential district in Hangzhou, China, built around European-style streets with paved walkways and fountain installations. The central tower rises above multistory apartment complexes, shopping areas, and landscaped green spaces that structure the neighborhood.
Construction began in 2007 as part of a Chinese urban development project intended to replicate international architectural elements. The district evolved over a decade from vacant buildings to an inhabited residential area.
The name Tianducheng translates to Sky City, though locals simply refer to it by its district name when giving directions. French terms on shop signs and street markers appear alongside Chinese characters, creating a mixed visual language throughout the area.
Huangheshan station on Line 3 of the Hangzhou Metro connects the district to central city areas since February 2022. Visitors interested in exploring the European-inspired architecture should wear comfortable shoes, as the plazas and streets are best reached on foot.
Photographs of the district circulated online and attracted visitors who wanted wedding photos taken against the tower backdrop. What started as a sparsely visited site became a popular destination for weekend photo shoots.
