Pengbu Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge across Qiantang River in Hangzhou, China.
Pengbu Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge spanning over 35 kilometers across the Qiantang River in Hangzhou with six traffic lanes and modern pedestrian pathways. The structure links southern and northern areas of Zhejiang Province and handles heavy daily traffic flow between different cities.
Construction began in June 2003 and the project was driven forward through complex engineering work across the river with its strong tidal currents and winds. The official opening took place in May 2008 and marked a major infrastructure improvement for the region.
The bridge design incorporates elements that reflect Chinese engineering capabilities while connecting different regions of Zhejiang Province through improved transportation networks.
The bridge significantly reduces travel distance between Ningbo and Shanghai and enables faster, more direct access between the two city regions. Visitors should note that this is primarily a transportation corridor and is not designed as a tourist destination.
Engineers embedded specialized steel piles to withstand the strong tidal forces and intense winds characteristic of this river region. This technical solution allowed the structure to endure extreme environmental conditions that made the project particularly challenging.
