Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University, University campus in Hangzhou, China
Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University is a university campus on the northwest side of West Lake in Hangzhou, surrounded by several hills. It houses departments covering physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, and computer science, each with its own buildings and research facilities.
The campus was founded in 1956 as an academic center for Zhejiang University, with a focus on science and engineering from the start. One of its most noted buildings, the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of Science, was a gift from a well-known Hong Kong media figure to the university.
The campus sits at the foot of several hills, and the surrounding landscape shapes the daily life of students in a noticeable way. Paths between the teaching buildings pass through open green areas where the change of seasons is easy to follow throughout the year.
The grounds have several entrances and are easy to walk through, though the hilly layout means comfortable shoes are a good idea. A visit during the semester or in spring tends to be the best time, when the grounds are active and the vegetation is at its most appealing.
One of China's largest botanical gardens is located on these grounds, used for research and teaching and often missed by visitors. The plant collections there offer a quieter corner of the campus that feels quite different from the busier academic buildings nearby.
