Hongji Bridge, Stone arch bridge in Nanxun District, China.
Hongji Bridge is a stone arch structure that crosses the Dongshi River in Nanxun Ancient Town, connecting different sections of the historic area. The rounded arch rises above the water and supports a flat walking surface for pedestrians passing through.
This crossing was rebuilt by local residents in 1805 during the Jiaqing period, who completed the entire project in one year. In 1937, the National Army damaged the bridge deck partly to stop advancing Japanese forces during wartime conflict.
The bridge served as a vital crossing point where merchants, farmers, and townspeople moved goods and themselves across the river daily. Its design reflects the practical building methods that local craftsmen used to solve everyday transportation needs.
The bridge is easy to reach on foot and open to visitors exploring Nanxun Ancient Town at any time. Walking across during daylight hours gives the best views of the surrounding water and town architecture.
The entire structure was built by community effort using only hand tools and traditional methods without modern equipment. This collective accomplishment shows how local people worked together to create a lasting crossing point in just one year.
