Taiwan Pavilion, World Expo pavilion in Shanghai, China
The Taiwan Pavilion is an exhibition building from the Shanghai World Expo featuring modern architecture combined with digital displays throughout. The structure showcases technological capabilities and industrial achievements of Taiwan across multiple exhibition areas.
Taiwan's previous Expo participation had been at Osaka in 1970, so the Shanghai pavilion ended a 40-year gap. After the 2010 event the building was dismantled and shipped to Taiwan; Hsinchu City won it with a bid of NT$458 million. Rebuilt over two years, it reopened in Hsinchu on 21 February 2013 under Global Mall, which closed the site on 30 June 2016. In September 2017, after a MediaTek donation, the city planned to convert it into a children's discovery museum.
The pavilion's theme was "Mountain, Water, Heart Lantern: Nature, Mind, City," and its centerpiece was a giant LED sphere called "Taiwan's Heart," surrounded by a water platform fed from Sun Moon Lake and the Pacific Ocean. The exterior walls are engraved with the ridgelines of Yushan, Alishan and other Taiwanese mountains. Its theme song, "Taiwan's Heartbeat," was sung by Jolin Tsai.
The pavilion no longer stands in Shanghai: it was dismantled after Expo 2010 and rebuilt in Hsinchu, Taiwan, opening there on 21 February 2013 at No. 6, Gongdao 5th Road. The Hsinchu site closed on 30 June 2016 and was later planned as the Hsinchu Children's Exploration Museum, so check its current status before travelling.
The pavilion's outer wall is engraved with the ridgelines of Taiwan's Yushan, Alishan and other high mountains, and the water in the lighting pool around the central LED sphere was drawn from Sun Moon Lake and the Pacific Ocean. The building was designed by the Li Zuyuan architecture firm.
