Xianghai National Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Tongyu County, China
Xianghai National Nature Reserve is a large protected area in northeastern China that includes sand dunes, elm forests, grasslands, wetlands, and lakes. The mix of these different habitats supports a wide range of wildlife.
The reserve was recognized as an Important Wetland of international significance in 1992, highlighting its role in global conservation work. This recognition led to stronger protection measures for the habitats and bird migration routes.
Local communities practice traditional reed harvesting and fishing methods that have been part of life here for generations. These activities show how people and nature coexist in this region.
Spring and autumn are the best times for bird watching, when migrating birds pass through in large numbers. Visitors should prepare for long walks and bring warm clothing and binoculars.
The reserve shelters more than 200 red-crowned cranes, representing about ten percent of their global population. It also hosts nearly 300 other bird species that visitors can spot throughout the year.
