Tianfeng Pagoda

Tianfeng Pagoda is a hexagonal tower in Ningbo's old city featuring seven visible stories that rise approximately 51 meters high. The structure displays typical Song Dynasty architecture with stone columns, arched windows, and decorative details visible at each level.

Construction began in 695 during the Tang Dynasty as a religious structure. The building underwent major rebuilds several times, with the most significant renovation happening in 1144 during the Southern Song period.

The name references wind direction and celestial forces central to Chinese tradition. You can observe how the structure fits into Ningbo's old quarter today and how locals relate to it as part of their urban landscape.

The pagoda is located in an accessible part of the old city with good connections to public transport. Wear comfortable shoes since the pathways in the historic quarter can be uneven and climbing through the interior levels requires some effort.

During maintenance work in 1957, workers discovered a bronze dagoba from 955 hidden inside the structure with historical inscriptions carved on it. This discovery reveals details about the religious practices and craftsmanship of an earlier era.
