Anderson Road Quarry, Former quarry site in Kwun Tong District, Hong Kong
Anderson Road Quarry is a former stone extraction site in the Kwun Tong District of Hong Kong that has been converted into a new residential neighborhood. The terrain sits at different elevation levels connected by footbridges, elevator towers, and escalators built into the hillside.
The quarry operated for decades before stone extraction stopped and the land was cleared for redevelopment. Work on converting it into a residential area began around 2016, marking a turning point for the eastern part of the Kwun Tong District.
The site serves as a gathering point where residents experience how Hong Kong integrates new neighborhoods into existing communities. Public spaces here reflect the blend between neighborhood life and contemporary urban expansion.
The area is best explored on foot, as footbridges and escalators connect the different levels of the hillside. Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea since the paths involve noticeable changes in elevation throughout the site.
Rather than leveling the old quarry ground, planners chose to keep the terraced shape of the excavated hillside and build the neighborhood around it. This means the streets and buildings sit at very different heights, giving the area a vertical layout rarely seen in other parts of Hong Kong.
