Lung Tsai Ng Yuen, Private Chinese garden on Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
Lung Tsai Ng Yuen is a private Chinese garden on Lantau Island in Hong Kong, featuring a lotus pond, a zigzag bridge, and ceramic lions placed around the grounds. A main building topped with a viewing pagoda stands at the center of the layout.
The garden was created in 1962 by a textile merchant who built it as a private retreat on what was then a remote part of Lantau Island. It has remained in private hands since and is not open to the general public.
The zigzag bridge crossing the lotus pond follows an old belief that evil spirits can only travel in straight lines, so the bends are meant to stop them from crossing. This detail gives the garden a layer of meaning that goes beyond decoration.
The garden can only be reached on foot along hiking trails that cross hilly terrain, with no road access nearby. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, and it helps to allow extra time since the walk back can be as tiring as the approach.
Although the garden is private property, the owners have long tolerated hikers who pass through and look around, so there is no gate or fee. There is no official entrance or signage, which means most visitors come across it by chance while walking the surrounding trails.
