Ancient WongPou Port, Ancient port site in Haizhu District, Guangzhou, China

Ancient WongPou Port, originally called Jiangyuan Wharf, is a rebuilt dock area on the Shiji River in Haizhu District, Guangzhou. The 2006 reconstruction covers 6,000 square metres and holds a replica ancient quay, a waterfront zone, a garden area and a monument to the Swedish ship Götheborg's visit. The Yuehai First Pass museum, a 1,670-square-metre reconstruction, is divided into foreign-affairs, tax and barracks halls.

The port was established in 1685 and served as China's main international trading checkpoint, where foreign ships needed licenses before doing business in Guangzhou. This gatekeeping role made it central to the region's trade networks of that era.

The exhibition hall at the site displays maritime artifacts and trade documents that show how merchants lived and worked during the port's busiest years. You can see how this place brought people from different regions together and shaped exchange networks.

The site lies in Haizhu District, by the Shiji River in the former Huangpu Village, and is divided into four zones: the memorial display area, the old port park, the boardwalk dining area and the village square. The display hall occupies about 2,000 sq m in the village's Liang ancestral hall, while the reconstructed Yuehai First Pass complex covers 1,670 sq m. The East Embankment of nearby Shiji Village sells local snacks such as tingzai porridge and double-skin milk.

The village is known for a special ginger milk dessert where hot ginger juice makes fresh milk solidify instantly into a smooth pudding. This local specialty developed from available ingredients and has remained a signature dish passed down through generations.
