Ap Lei Chau Municipal Services Building, Municipal services building in Southern District, Hong Kong.
The Ap Lei Chau Municipal Services Building is a six-floor building on Hung Shing Street in the Southern District of Hong Kong, housing a public market, a sports center and a cooked food center. Each of these facilities occupies its own floor and covers different everyday needs of local residents.
The building was completed in March 1999 and was the last project finished by the Urban Council before it was dissolved. That body had managed public facilities in Hong Kong for decades before being disbanded at the end of 1999.
The ground floor market is a daily meeting point where locals buy fresh vegetables, meat and seafood from stall holders. Choosing ingredients for the day's meals is a set part of the neighborhood's daily rhythm.
The ground floor market is most active in the early morning, while the sports center on the upper floors is open throughout the day into the evening. The main entrance on Hung Shing Street is well signposted and easy to find on foot.
The building was among the first public facilities in Hong Kong to have air conditioning installed throughout, including the market areas. At the time, this was very uncommon for markets and sports centers.
