Fong Yuen Study Hall, Traditional study hall in Ma Wan, Hong Kong
Fong Yuen Study Hall is a two-story rectangular building in Ma Wan with a mix of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The structure features brick walls with an arched entrance and a garden area surrounding the complex.
The Chan family built the original structure before 1900, and it was reconstructed and renamed Fong Yuen Study Hall in the 1920s. This renovation period marked a shift in how the building served its community.
The building shows how education was organized for ordinary people and what role the community played in sharing knowledge. Visitors can see how rooms were arranged for learning and the role this place held for local families.
The site is on an island and requires a ferry trip to reach, so plan accordingly for travel time. Morning or afternoon visits work best, and checking weather conditions before you go helps ensure a comfortable visit.
This is the only surviving pre-war school building on Ma Wan island, making it a rare window into local education history. Its preservation tells us how learning institutions developed on the island when few other examples remain.
