Po Fook Hill Elevator, Funicular railway in Sha Tin, Hong Kong.
Po Fook Hill Elevator is an inclined transportation system with a single cabin manufactured by Gangloff of Switzerland for vertical movement. It accommodates 10 passengers per trip, with six seats on wooden benches and space for four standing individuals.
The system was installed within Po Fook Hill Ancestral Hall to provide access to different levels of this traditional Chinese memorial structure. It emerged from the practical need to help visitors navigate the steep vertical distances within the building.
The elevator sits within an ancestral hall where families continue to gather for traditional ceremonies honoring deceased relatives.
The system is free to use and allows visitors to move easily between different building levels without having to manage steep stairs. The journey is quick and runs regularly, so waiting time is typically minimal.
Passengers can independently operate the cabin using internal controls and communicate through an intercom system during the journey. This feature offers an authentic look at a practical solution for daily access to the ancestral hall.
