Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Cultural museum in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is a museum in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong, with seven exhibition galleries spread across several floors. The rooms display objects ranging from old ceramics to film posters and document different aspects of urban life.
The institution opened in 2000 to bring together local history and everyday objects in one central place. Since then, thematic exhibitions have changed regularly while the permanent collections have expanded.
The name reflects the goal of showing both material and intangible heritage of the region. Visitors see in the halls traditional costumes and musical instruments from opera that is still performed today in smaller theaters.
The Che Kung Temple station is a short walk away and connects the building with the rest of the city. The building is usually quieter in the morning, while more families and school groups arrive in the afternoon and on weekends.
One of the halls is dedicated to the early film industry and shows old cameras and costumes from Hong Kong productions. Another area presents handmade puppets and props that were used in traditional performances.
