Tao Fung Shan, Religious center in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong.
Tao Fung Shan is a religious center set on a 130-meter hill in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, featuring an octagonal chapel and buildings designed in Chinese architectural style. The complex also includes a library and contemplative outdoor spaces arranged for religious and meditative purposes.
Danish architect Johannes Prip-Moller designed the center in 1930 for Norwegian missionary Karl Ludvig Reichelt. Reichelt established it here after leaving Nanjing due to political changes in China at that time.
The center merges Chinese building traditions with Christian expressions, visible in the artwork and hand-painted ceramics displayed throughout the spaces. This blend shapes how people experience the place, where Eastern and Western religious forms coexist in daily use.
The center is accessible via a 20-minute hiking trail from Sha Tin Station or by taxi from nearby Tai Wai. The path uphill is fairly steep, so visitors should wear proper footwear and allow enough time for the ascent.
A 12-meter concrete cross towers over Sha Tin valley and can be seen from many spots around the area. Adjacent to this landmark is a meditation labyrinth placed beside a lotus pond, part of the quieter sections of the grounds.
