Genshanmen, City gate of Hangzhou
Genshanmen is a city gate in Hangzhou that once formed part of the old city wall. The structure is made of stone and brick, and it sits at the entrance to the historic center of the city.
The gate was built around the 6th century during the Sui Dynasty as part of the city's defense system. In the early 1900s many walls and gates fell into disrepair, but Genshanmen was later restored and now stands as a symbol of Hangzhou's long past.
The gate sits in a busy historic district and is easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. The area around it features small shops, cafes, and local stalls that make visiting a pleasant way to explore the old city center.
The name means Root Mountain Gate and refers to its location near a mountain area. The inscriptions and carved stones show the craftsmanship of that era and are over a hundred years old.
