Huiyuan Fortress

Huiyuan Fortress is a military stronghold in Huocheng County located near the Ili River. The remains show defensive walls and military structures that reflect the building practices of the Qing Dynasty period.

The fortress was built in 1764 under Emperor Qianlong and served as the administrative seat of the General of Ili. It was destroyed in the 1860s during a regional uprising, ending its military role.

The fortress served as a meeting point where Chinese officials and local communities interacted within the border region. Different cultures came together here and shaped daily life in this frontier area.

The site is accessible via China National Highway 312 and by rail connections that link to the wider region. Visitors should prepare for variable weather since the ruins are located in an open area with minimal shelter.

At the current location, a bell tower and pavilion have been reconstructed about 5 kilometers north of where the original fortress stood. These new structures help visitors understand the layout and function of the original site.
