Dragon Gate Grotto

Dragon Gate Grotto is a rock-cut complex featuring stone archways, platforms, and sculptures carved directly into the cliff face of the Western Hills near Kunming. The site comprises multiple chambers and passages that form an interconnected structure within the rock itself.

Local stone craftsmen worked over 70 years between 1782 and 1854 during the Qing dynasty to complete this monumental Taoist rock-cut complex. The lengthy construction period demonstrates the enormous effort invested in creating this religious site.

The central Datiange chamber displays intricate stone carvings and religious motifs reflecting the craftsmen's Taoist beliefs. These representations offer visitors insight into the spiritual convictions that shaped this place when it was built.

The site sits at 2,300 meters elevation with views of Dianchi Lake and Kunming city from multiple observation platforms. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain and stairs that wind through the rock formations.

Stone inscriptions within the rock face contain documented medical recipes from the time it was carved. These records represent an early form of preserving knowledge about traditional Chinese healing methods.
