Fehmarn, Baltic Sea island municipality in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
Fehmarn is a municipality on a Baltic Sea island in Ostholstein, Schleswig-Holstein. The island stretches across flat fields and low coastal sections, with sandy beaches in the south and rockier shores in the north.
Slavic tribes settled here in the early Middle Ages before the island passed under Danish and later German rule. The connection to the mainland via the Fehmarn Sound Bridge opened in 1963 and fundamentally changed accessibility.
The name derives from medieval "Fehmarn", likely connected to Old Slavic roots meaning water passage or strait. Local farmers still work the flat agricultural land that dominates much of the interior, while fishing villages dot the coastline.
The island can be explored easily by car or bicycle, as most roads run flat and clearly. Windy conditions are common, especially along the open coastline, so bringing appropriate clothing is advisable.
Jimi Hendrix gave his final public concert at Flügge Beach in September 1970, just days before his death. A simple memorial stone on the beach marks this moment in rock history today.
