Zwickau, Industrial urban municipality in Saxony, Germany

Zwickau sits in the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde river on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains and ranks as Saxony's fourth largest city. The old town spreads around the main market square, while residential districts and industrial zones occupy the slopes and surrounding land.

The settlement gained importance as a trading post in 1118 and received royal market rights around 1150. Between 1135 and 1145 it developed into an imperial city.

The city takes its name from the Slavic word Świkawa, referring to the waters of the Mulde river. The main market square, surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque townhouses, serves as the center of urban life where locals gather for shopping and events.

The main train station offers direct connections to Leipzig and other cities across Saxony. From there, the city center can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.

This is where German automotive history began with the founding of Horch and later Audi. Later, Trabant cars were built in the same factories, and today Volkswagen electric vehicles roll off the production lines.
