Kreis Olpe, Rural district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Kreis Olpe is a rural district in southwestern Sauerland, spanning mountainous and forested terrain traversed by the Lenne River. Seven municipalities make up the area, connected by major highways.
The area was founded in 1817 as Kreis Bilstein and received its present name in 1819 when Olpe became the administrative center. This reorganization marked a shift in how the region was governed.
Shooting festivals remain deeply woven into community life, bringing people together for competitions and celebrations throughout the year. These gatherings shape how locals mark time and spend time with one another.
The terrain is hilly and heavily forested, so sturdy shoes and weather protection are advisable. The two major highways provide good access, and individual towns can be explored by car or bus.
The coat of arms merges the Cologne cross with the Lords of Fürstenberg emblem, reflecting different historical powers that once shaped the land. This visual combination appears in old documents and buildings throughout the area.
