Ostallgäu

The Ostallgäu district extends across 1,395 square kilometers of terrain, from pre-alpine lands to the Alps, with numerous hills shaped by glacial activity.

The district emerged through administrative reforms in 1972, consolidating the former districts of Kaufbeuren, Marktoberdorf, and Füssen into a single administrative unit.

The region maintains strong agricultural traditions, with local farmers producing mountain cheese and operating dairy farms that define the local gastronomy.

Marktoberdorf serves as the administrative center of the district, connecting 45 municipalities through an efficient network of regional trains and buses.

The district contains the Forggensee, a 16-square-kilometer artificial lake that supports both local ecosystems and water-based recreational activities throughout the year.
