Adlerturm Dortmund, Medieval tower in Dortmund, Germany

The Adlerturm is a medieval fortification tower in Dortmund and one of the few surviving structures from the city's defensive system. Inside, museum exhibits across different levels show how the city looked and functioned during the Middle Ages.

The tower was built around 1300 as part of Dortmund's defensive network and later removed in 1836, then reconstructed in 1992 based on historical records. This reconstruction helped restore one of the city's most recognizable medieval landmarks.

The tower's name references the eagles that once decorated Dortmund's coat of arms and represented the city's power. Visitors today encounter displays that show how people lived and worked within the medieval city walls.

The tower stands in the city center and is within walking distance of downtown Dortmund. Visitors should allow time to explore the different floors and may want to check ahead if they plan to visit with a group.

Inside, visitors can handle medieval weapons and try on period clothing to experience daily life from that era. The museum also offers hands-on opportunities for amateur archaeology that reveal how experts study the past.
