Europabrunnen, Modern fountain at Kleppingstrasse corner with Ostenhellweg, Dortmund, Germany
The Europabrunnen is a modern fountain at the corner of Kleppingstrasse and Ostenhellweg featuring multiple water basins arranged at different heights. Water cascades down through the structure, flows past a bronze frog sculpture, and collects in the main lower pool.
The fountain was designed by artist Joachim Schmettau and presented to Dortmund in 1989. It replaced an older stepped fountain that previously occupied the same location.
The name was chosen by Dortmund citizens and reflects the period of European elections and German reunification. The monument expresses the confidence in European cooperation that existed at that time.
The fountain marks where the pedestrian shopping area begins, featuring wide edges that work well for sitting and resting. It serves as a natural meeting point for visitors exploring the surrounding streets.
The water on the northern side follows a distinct path around the bronze frog before stepping down into the main basin. This deliberate design creates an engaging water feature that draws attention when you stop to watch it.
