Senftenberg stands at 102 meters above sea level, situated north of the Black Elster River and adjacent to Lake Senftenberg in Brandenburg.

The first official mention of Senftenberg dates to 1279 through a document from Henry III, followed by transfers between the Duchy of Jawor and Kingdom of Bohemia.
