Hanover Stadtbahn, Light rail system in Hanover, Germany
Hanover Stadtbahn is a light rail network in the Hanover metropolitan area that covers 121 kilometers and serves 201 stops, including 19 underground stations. The system links the city center with surrounding municipalities such as Langenhagen, Laatzen, Garbsen, and Ronnenberg through a dense route network.
The first underground section between Waterloo and Hauptbahnhof stations opened in 1975 and marked the beginning of the modern light rail system. Over the following 25 years, the new network gradually replaced the existing tram lines throughout the region.
The Stadtbahn connects residents to major urban centers, universities, and the Hanover fairground, where international events like CeBIT and Hannover Messe take place.
Trains run daily between 4 in the morning and 1 at night, providing continuous connections to all parts of the metropolitan area. Short trips are available at low fares within the Greater Hanover Transport Network.
The network uses three different train models, including the TW 6000, TW 2000 Silberpfeil, and TW 3000. Around 125 million passengers ride the system each year for their daily journeys across the region.
