Volcanic Eifel, Geological formation in Eifel region, Germany

Volcanic Eifel is a volcanic landform in the Eifel Mountains in Germany, covering a large part of western Rhineland-Palatinate. The formations include cinder cones, circular maar lakes, and lava fields scattered among forested hills and open valleys.

Laacher See formed around 12900 years ago through a massive eruption that spread ash as far as Italy. Further eruptions over thousands of years created the maars and cones that now shape the landscape.

The maar lakes in the Eifel carry names that often reflect their round shape or local use, and residents from surrounding villages have been swimming and fishing in these waters for generations. Many towns host festivals by the crater lakes, where the connection between landscape and local life becomes visible.

Several information centers across the geopark offer maps and guidance on trails that lead through the craters and lava formations. The paths vary in difficulty, and checking the weather forecast is advisable, as some routes can become slippery after rain.

Measurements from 2020 showed ground movements and a rising magma plume beneath the Eifel, indicating that volcanic activity continues. Researchers monitor these changes to better understand the development of the underground system.
