Besucherbergwerk Kleinenbremen

Besucherbergwerk Kleinenbremen is a former iron ore mining site in Porta Westfalica with underground passages that descend into layers dating from the Cretaceous period. The tunnels extend through multiple levels and display the marks left by extraction work across different sections.

Mining at this location began in 1881 and continued for several decades until operations ceased in 1960. The site was then converted into an educational facility and opened to the public as a visitor mine in 1988.

The name reflects the miners who worked here across generations, and visitors can still see traces of their daily routines displayed throughout. The objects on view reveal how workers used their tools and what life underground actually looked like.

Visits take place under professional guidance through the underground passages, and bringing warm clothing is advisable since the temperature below ground remains consistently cool. Access to certain areas can be uneven and requires some mobility, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Deep within the tunnels, groundwater has formed an underground lake that visitors encounter during guided tours. This blue water creates an unexpected contrast against the barren stone surroundings of the mine passages.
