Besucherbergwerk Kleinenbremen, Iron ore show mine and museum in Porta Westfalica, Germany.

Besucherbergwerk Kleinenbremen is a former iron ore mine in Porta Westfalica, open to visitors as a show mine, museum, and geological site. The underground tunnels pass through rock layers from the Cretaceous period, with traces of extraction work still visible along the walls and ceilings.

Iron ore extraction at this site began in 1881 and continued for nearly eight decades before operations stopped in 1960. The site opened to the public in 1988, and has since served as a place where visitors can learn about geology and the history of mining in the region.

The name Kleinenbremen comes from the nearby village, and the mine was once central to the working lives of many local families. Inside the tunnels, tools and personal objects left by miners are on display, showing what daily work underground actually looked like.

Tours are guided and move through underground passages where the temperature stays cool year-round, so warm clothing is worth bringing regardless of the season. The ground can be uneven in places, and sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially for children or older visitors.

Inside the tunnels, groundwater has collected over the years to form an underground lake that visitors pass during the guided tour. The water appears in a deep blue tone against the dark stone walls, making it one of the more unexpected moments of the visit.
