Bert-Brecht-Haus, Cultural education center in Oberhausen, Germany
The Bert-Brecht-Haus is a seven-story brick building with expressionist features standing in downtown Oberhausen between Langemarkstraße and Paul-Reusch-Straße. It contains a library with thousands of books and media items plus spaces for educational programs and community events.
The building was constructed in 1928 by architect Otto Scheib and originally housed a newspaper operation and a department store by Leonhard Tietz AG. Major renovations in 2011 transformed it into its current role as a library and education center.
The building serves today as a gathering place where residents meet for classes and events. People use its spaces to connect, learn together, and participate in community activities offered throughout the year.
The building is centrally located and easy to navigate, with clear signage in the entrance area and staff available to help with directions. Visitors can freely explore the open spaces and obtain information about available programs and services at the main desk.
The facility includes a community radio studio where residents can produce and broadcast their own radio shows with professional support. This unusual feature gives ordinary people a chance to share their voices and stories on air.
