Castans Panopticum, Wax figure museum in central Berlin, Germany
Castans Panopticum was a wax figure museum in central Berlin displaying over 500 figures and various exhibitions. The establishment occupied four floors in the Pschorr Brewery building on Friedrichstraße and presented wax figures alongside optical illusions, death masks, and anatomical displays.
Founded by Louis and Gustave Castan in 1869, the museum opened at Schlossplatz and later relocated after a fire. The establishment eventually moved to Friedrichstraße where it operated for several decades until 1922.
The collection displayed German royalty, politicians, artists, and foreign leaders as wax figures that drew public curiosity. It reflected the interests of visitors who wanted to see representations of famous historical figures from their own time.
Visitors navigated four floors with multiple exhibition areas and special sections including a mirror maze. Planning sufficient time to explore all sections was advisable since the museum contained diverse attractions throughout its levels.
The museum displayed not only wax figures but also living people from different nations as part of its presentations. This combination of artificial and real human performers created an unusual experience that set it apart from similar establishments of the era.
