Feldbergfest, Mountain sports festival in Feldberg, Germany

The Feldbergfest is a multi-day gymnastics and sports festival held on the 879-metre Großer Feldberg, the highest peak in the Hessian Taunus. It combines gymnastics competitions with hiking and singing events, and has taken place almost annually since 1844, except during war years.

The first Feldbergfest took place in 1844 and was founded to promote German unity through sports and community gatherings. The event grew quickly in importance and drew thousands of visitors who assembled on the mountain summit.

The festival's name comes from the Großer Feldberg, where it has been held since 1844; the 150th edition took place in 2006. It began as a fundraiser: gymnasts and singers were invited to raise money for a hiking lodge and lookout tower on the summit. The Feldberghaus was inaugurated in 1860, and the festival has been held almost every summer since, except in war years.

The summit is easiest to reach during the summer months when competitions take place and conditions are most favorable. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring appropriate clothing and footwear for mountainous terrain.

The 1844 festival was organised to fund a hiking lodge and lookout tower on the summit, planned by a commission August Ravenstein co-founded in 1842. The tower itself was only built in 1902, and the Feldberghaus opened in 1860. The 150th edition took place in 2006.
