Essen Cathedral Treasury, Medieval church treasure at Burgplatz, Essen, Germany
The Essen Cathedral Treasury displays sacred artifacts, including ancient reliquaries, crosses, and sculptures within a dedicated chamber of the cathedral complex.
The treasury originated in 850 when Saxon nobleman Altfrid established a convent for noble women, leading to a collection spanning over 1150 years.
The collection contains the Golden Madonna from 980 AD, representing the oldest complete sculptural portrayal of the Virgin Mary in Western art.
The treasury opens Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00, offering visitors direct access to medieval religious artifacts at Burgplatz 2.
A seven-branched bronze candelabrum from 1000 AD stands as the earliest existing example of its type in Christian religious history.
