The Felsengänge forms an extensive underground system of passages and cellars carved into red sandstone beneath the streets of Nuremberg, spanning 25,000 square meters.
In 1380, Nuremberg city council established regulations requiring every brewer to construct cellars for beer fermentation, leading to the creation of this underground network.
The cellars reflect medieval German brewing methods, with specialized storage spaces, cooling domes, and ventilation systems designed for maintaining optimal beer temperatures.
Visitors can join guided tours starting at Brauereiladen Altstadthof, which include historical information and conclude with local beer tasting sessions.
During World War II, these underground passages served as air raid shelters for 40,000 people and protected valuable artifacts from destruction.
