Unterstmatt, Ski resort in Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Unterstmatt is a ski resort located along the Black Forest High Road in northern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It offers several slopes served by three lifts, sitting at an elevation where snowfall is relatively reliable in winter.
In 1905, the Kurhaus Unterstmatt was built, marking the start of the area's life as a place for rest and recreation. Over the following decades, it grew into a winter sports destination serving the surrounding region.
The name Unterstmatt comes from the German word "Matte", meaning a mountain meadow where cattle rested at midday. This farming past is still visible today in the open, grassy terrain that surrounds the slopes.
The best time to visit is between December and March, when snow cover is most likely to be consistent. Since the Black Forest is not a high alpine range, it is worth checking conditions before heading out.
Night skiing is available here, which is rare for the Black Forest region. This means visitors can ski after dark, something that few other spots in the area offer.
