Gallus Theater, Independent theater in Gallus, Frankfurt, Germany

Gallus Theater is a free theater in Frankfurt's Gallus district, housed since 1998 on the grounds of the former Adlerwerke. It serves as a rehearsal stage and performance venue for independent theater and artist groups from the Rhine-Main region, with a focus on children's and youth theater.

The theater grew out of the Internationales Solidaritätszentrum e.V., founded in 1973, which moved into a former car workshop on Krifteler Straße in 1975 as the Gallus-Zentrum. In 1978 the British director Brian Michaels founded the Teatro Siciliano there, and its troupe of young Italian migrants, I MACAP, gained international recognition. From 1983 the venue operated under the name Gallus Theater, and in 1998 it moved to the site of the former Adlerwerke.

The theater's name comes from the Gallusviertel, the district near the former gallows field that became an industrial and migrant-workers' quarter. Its work grew out of the multinational Gallus-Zentrum, and since 1997 it has co-organized Visionale, Hesse's largest children's and youth film festival.

The theater sits on the grounds of the former Adlerwerke in the Gallus district, a site it moved to in 1998 at the suggestion of city planning official Martin Wentz. It works as a rehearsal and performance venue for independent companies from the Rhine-Main region, so the programme changes with each guest production. The theater has co-organized Visionale, Hesse's largest children's and youth film festival, since 1997. In 2016 it hosted Tanzplattform Deutschland, a national dance platform. Its directors have been Winfried Becker and Heike Bonzelius since 1985.
