Schellenberger Eishöhle

Located at 1570 meters in the Untersberg massif, this natural cave system extends over 3620 meters through limestone formations and permanent ice structures.

The cave was first documented in writing during 1826, underwent complete exploration by 1874, and opened to visitors as a show cave in 1925.

The Verein für Höhlenkunde Schellenberg organization maintains this natural monument, offering guided tours with traditional carbide lamp illumination through ice chambers.

Visitors need to undertake a three-hour walk from Marktschellenberg or use the Untersberg cable car followed by a two-hour hike to reach the entrance.

This cave maintains temperatures between -0.5 and +1.0 degrees Celsius year-round, containing approximately 60,000 cubic meters of permanent ice formations.
