Abbaye de Kreitz

Kreitz Abbey is a Benedictine convent in Holzheim with a Neo-Romanesque church, guest facilities, and residential buildings for the sisters. The grounds sit near the A46 highway and form a self-contained religious community.

The monastery developed as a Benedictine community and grew into an established spiritual center over the decades. A bombing raid in May 1943 destroyed large portions of the buildings and caused many deaths among the residents.

The Benedictine nuns here follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, which weaves together prayer, work, and silence in their daily lives. This routine shapes how the monastery functions and gives the place its inner rhythm.

The grounds are generally open to visitors, though visits work best when arranged in advance. The proximity to the highway makes it easy to reach, but the area remains a quiet religious site with limited public amenities.

The community supports itself largely through the production of communion wafers, which serves as its main source of income. This specialized craft connects the monastery's daily work directly to religious service for believers worldwide.
