Burg Helpenstein

Burg Helpenstein is a castle site in Neuss comprising an earthen mound roughly 7 meters high with a base diameter of about 60 meters that narrows to roughly 40 meters at its peak. The remaining structure reveals how medieval builders shaped this defensive position.

The von Helpenstein family established their seat at this location in 1094, with Harpernus von Helpenstein first documented in writing in 1148. After the fortress suffered two destructions, the family built a replacement residence called Haus Helpenstein nearby in 1374.

The site preserves evidence of human occupation from the Middle and Late Stone Age periods, with artifacts now housed in museum collections. These finds show how long people lived and worked in this location.

The castle remains sit near Grafenstraße and are accessible to visitors wishing to examine the structure and medieval construction methods. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable since the ground is uneven and can become slippery after rain.

This motte-type fortress experienced two complete destructions throughout its history, which changed its character significantly. These remnants show how medieval fortifications were sometimes overcome rather than rebuilt in updated form.
