Burg Helpenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Neuss, Germany
The fortress remains include a seven-meter-high hill with a base diameter of 60 meters, narrowing to 40 meters at its summit.
The von Helpenstein family established their residence at this location in 1094, with first written documentation of Harpernus von Helpenstein dating from 1148.
The castle site contains archaeological evidence of human settlements from the Middle and Late Stone Age, including numerous tools preserved at the Rheinisches Museum.
The castle foundations are visible near Grafenstraße, where visitors can examine the medieval construction techniques used in this former defensive structure.
This motte-type castle experienced two destructions, leading to the construction of a new residence called Haus Helpenstein nearby in 1374.
