Kästeklippen, Granite rock formation in Harz mountains, Germany.
Kästeklippen is a granite rock formation in the Harz mountains composed of massive granite blocks shaped over millions of years by erosion and weathering processes. The rocks rise to approximately 600 meters and define the distinctive landscape of this mountain range.
The granite blocks formed during the Harz mountain uplift roughly 300 million years ago when tectonic forces pushed the rock to the surface. Ice ages and weathering later shaped the distinctive forms visible today.
The formation includes a notable rock structure called Der Alte vom Berge, which displays natural features resembling an elderly man's face.
The site is well reached by several hiking trails connecting to Oker Reservoir and nearby Bad Harzburg. Spring through autumn offers the best conditions for exploring, when trails are dry and easy to walk.
The granite blocks display a distinctive weathering pattern called woolsack weathering, creating thick rounded shapes throughout the formation. This occurs when rock is evenly worn away from all sides, producing the chunky characteristic forms.
