Marienkirche, Gothic church in Untermhaus district, Gera, Germany.
Marienkirche is a Gothic church in the Untermhaus district of Gera, situated near the White Elster river. It features two neo-Gothic towers on its west facade and contains a late Gothic altar inside, along with an organ built in 1894 that has 27 registers.
The chancel of the church dates to 1193, making it one of the oldest religious structures in the region. The main construction began in 1440, and the building later received its current neo-Gothic appearance.
The church stands next to the birthplace of painter Otto Dix and regularly hosts musical performances throughout the year. It serves as a cultural gathering place for the local community.
The church holds regular services and accommodates around 650 visitors. Access to the building is straightforward, and current event information can be found at the site or through the local congregation.
From 1802 to 1854, the building served as a garrison church for the Reuss military forces stationed in the city. This military past is embedded in the place's history, even though the building has long since become a center for music and community.
