Neue Traunsteiner Hütte, building in Schneizlreuth, Upper Bavaria, Germany
Neue Traunsteiner Hütte is a simple mountain refuge on the Reiteralpe in the Berchtesgaden Alps at about 1,560 meters (5,118 feet) elevation. The wooden and stone building has roughly 80 beds and is run by Udo and Jessica Weidner, who serve warm meals and drinks.
The refuge was founded by the German Alpine Club and has long been part of climbing infrastructure in the region. It has grown from a simple shelter into a known resting point for hikers and mountaineers.
The hut's name reflects the Traunstein section of the German Alpine Club that manages it. Inside, hikers and climbers gather after their day on the mountain to share stories and enjoy meals together.
You can only reach the hut on foot, as there is no road to it; the climb takes several hours from the nearest access points. It is wise to bring cash, since the hut accepts payment in cash only, and to check opening times in advance, especially outside peak season.
In winter, a small heated room is available where hikers can shelter and wait for better weather even when the main hut is closed. This winter room serves as an important refuge for unexpected weather changes or emergencies during the cold season.
