Park Kolonnaden, Architectural ensemble near Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Germany
Park Kolonnaden is a building complex near Potsdamer Platz consisting of five connected structures with a prominent round glass dome at the main building. The ensemble spans the site and connects various functional areas through continuous arcades and open walkways.
The complex was built between 2000 and 2002 on the site of the former Haus Vaterland, which stood until 1976, and part of the eastern railway station grounds. Its construction marked the revitalization of a historically significant area after decades of decline.
The buildings served as a venue for the Expressionale exhibition in 2008, presenting significant works of German Expressionism and New Objectivity. This artistic use reflects the site's role as a center for contemporary art presentation.
The site sits directly on the U2 subway line, which runs beneath the complex, and provides good pedestrian accessibility across multiple levels. The arcades and passages allow weather-protected passage through the grounds, particularly useful in poor weather.
From 2005 to 2007, the main facade transformed into SPOTS, a large-scale digital art installation featuring works by international artists. This temporary intervention made the site an innovative meeting point between classical architecture and contemporary media.
