Skigebiet Willingen is a ski resort in the Sauerland region of central Germany, set on the slopes of the Ettelsberg hill. The area has a mix of gentle runs suited to beginners and steeper sections for more confident skiers, served by several lifts across the hillside.
Willingen grew as a winter sports destination during the 20th century, when lifts were built and the slopes were organized into a proper resort. The addition of snow-making equipment later helped the area remain open during winters with little natural snowfall.
The resort sits around the village of Willingen in the Upland region, an area that local people also use for hiking and cycling in warmer months. In winter, the surrounding hills fill with skiers and families who return here season after season.
The resort is most easily reached by car, with parking available near the village center and at the base of the slopes. Weekends and school holidays tend to be the busiest times, so arriving early in the day makes the visit more comfortable.
Skigebiet Willingen is one of the few ski areas in northwestern Germany where night skiing on lit runs is possible. This makes it a draw for day visitors from nearby cities who cannot fit a full day on the slopes into their schedule.
