Stuibenhütte is a mountain shelter in the Wetterstein range situated at 1640 meters below the Alpspitze peak. The refuge offers approximately 30 sleeping places in dormitory format and operates as a self-catering facility where visitors must bring their own provisions and water.
The German Alpine Club established this shelter as a strategic point for mountaineers accessing the surrounding peaks of the Wetterstein range. The simply constructed building became a permanent feature of the region's winter mountain sports infrastructure.
The hut embodies the tradition of self-catering principles in the Bavarian mountains, where winter mountaineers gather and prepare their own meals. Life there is shaped by mutual support between guests pursuing similar goals.
Access to this shelter is only possible on skis or snowshoes, as the route remains ungroomed during the winter months. Visitors should bring adequate food, water, and heat sources, since nothing is available for purchase on site.
The shelter operates only from December to March and runs completely off the power grid, making it a rare experience for winter and adventure seekers. Visitors sleep on basic mattresses while reducing their pack weight before ascending to higher peaks.
