Kennelgebiet, Public park in Braunschweig, Germany
Kennelgebiet is a public park in Brunswick, Germany, running along the Oker River with two artificial ponds, open meadows, and stretches of woodland. An outdoor swimming facility sits within the grounds, directly beside the water.
The area was laid out in the 18th century as part of Richmond Park, inspired by the English landscape garden tradition. The artificial basins were built in 1883 to supply water to Brunswick and only later became part of a leisure space.
The Kennelgebiet is where Brunswick residents spend ordinary days outdoors, with families on the grass, runners on the paths, and swimmers at the outdoor pool in summer. The mix of open meadows and wooded corners means different groups find a spot that suits them at any time of year.
The park is easy to reach on foot or by bike, and paths lead around the ponds, along the river, and through the wooded sections. The outdoor pool is only open in the warmer months, while the rest of the grounds can be visited year-round.
The railway embankments that frame parts of the park rise to nearly 66 feet (20 meters) in places, giving the ground an unexpected shape that is easy to miss if you follow only the main paths. On the southern edge, a curved bridge crosses the Oker and passes without much notice, even though it is one of the more unusual structures in the area.
