Pala d’oro, Medieval gold altar decoration in Aachen Cathedral, Germany
The Pala d'oro consists of seventeen relief plates made from pure gold sheets, displaying religious figures and biblical narratives in detailed craftsmanship.
Created in the first quarter of the eleventh century, this altar piece originated from a donation by the Saxon imperial house during the Ottonian period.
The central panel presents Christ in a mandorla with Mary and Archangel Michael, surrounded by evangelist symbols and scenes from the Passion story.
Visitors can view the Pala d'oro at the main altar in the Gothic choir hall of Aachen Cathedral during regular opening hours.
The gold plates contain an exceptionally high purity of 999.98 parts per thousand, making it one of the finest examples of medieval metalwork.
